4. A Super Fun Heart
5. The Basic Basic

I don't really have much to say today...

but I did list some new vintage (oxymoron?) and this dress I thought was pretty darn cute. The funny thing about this photo is I could barely squeeze into this dress. My arms were sausaged into the sleeves and the buttons in front were busting open. My sister, who was taking the photo, had to be like "ok, hold your breath...NOW!" and then the dress would look like it fit me. I'm not afraid to kill the magic for you. Or maybe you can already tell and I'm delusional. Those are some pretty stiff looking arms!

A Break From Regular Scheduled Programming

Thank god it's effing friday! Well, almost, but this week has been so busy I can't even believe I made it through. I went to a film at Hot Docs this week, which is a documentary film festival that is held every April in Toronto. I saw the film Bevel Up, and I need to tell you, if you can-see it. (it's on at 4:15 at Innis College this friday) It is about street nurses in Vancouver. I want to tell you more about it in depth, but I have deleted everything I've written three times now. I guess the fatigue is definitely sinking in. Check out the website. The nurses are beyond amazing in terms of their skill and their compassion for their patients and you need to see this film.

Bless Ya Novelty Tee

Here's what I found yesterday. A sweet 70s tee with a tacky iron on. I love it. And happy to say, only cost a fiver! YEA! The thing with the novelty tee is they always have some outlandish statement, which I am all for, but I am also a shy woman, so to parade around with a tee that proclaims "I'm tight like spandex" (actual vintage shirt I saw in Kensington Market) is not something I feel most comfortable doing. Even this one, which says "Perfect In Every Way" makes me a little uncomfortable, but I still think it's funny, and pretty cute, so I am wearing it.

MK

Mary Kate is the best. Her outfits just keep getting weirder and weirder and I love it. I was reading Lainey yesterday, and saw this intriguing new look. It looks terrible of course, but I think she makes it work. In her own Mary Kate kinda way. I think that is the real key to style. You just gotta giv'r. I have worked many a retail job, and something that people say time and time again is "Can I get away with this?" Of course you can't! Not with that attitude missy! If you wear what you like, without thinking about how people are judging you (and beware, because of course they are!) you can wear anything you darn well please and make it look good. Surprisingly, this theory works most of the time for me. I just won't mention the times when it doesn't. Or maybe I will. There was a time, not too long ago, when I purchased a beige one-piece pantsuit only to be told I looked like an inmate out of the film Monster. Great!
Here are some of my favorite MK style moments. Try it out this weekend. Wear something batty! You might be surprised at how good it looks. Happy friday!

I love today! (sorta)

It is soooo nice outside today I am in love with spring! What I am not in love with is waking up at 6:30 am, which is what I've been doing this week for a job. Hate it. Also, I have all this cool vintage I picked up in Windsor that I want to list, but it's been too busy to get that done this week. But I am on a short break right now and added a couple of things. More coming soon. Check out these red shoes. Aren't they sweet?

Sunny Day A-OK!

I found a pair of amazing sunglasses today. Which, of course, were outrageously expensive for me. 80 bucks. And while that may seem perfectly reasonable to most, it's a little rich for my blood, as they say. Especially since I usually end up losing, or dropping or sitting on all of my sunglasses within a few weeks. But these ones were, dare I say, the dopest. Red plastic frames with a mirrored front, and I guess for a pair of designer glasses they aren't that bad, but believe me I can rationalize any purchase, so maybe I'm just being ridiculous. They reminded me of these weird Coca Cola sunglasses I had as a kid. Which now that I think about it, were totally hilarious. (Basically a sheet of mylar with a Coca Cola label in the corner and plastic straps to wrap around your ears.) I think a lot of my favorite things are items that remind me of something I used to know, but have since forgotten about. That's why I kind of need to get these new shades. This is sort of what they look like. But red. And more fun.

FAT

I went to a show at Toronto Alternative Fashion Week last night. Fashion shows are always a strange experience. It's like almost just too much, you know? Like, everyone is secretly checking everyone out while pretending not to care. It is this close to becoming Zoolander and it is so hilarious to me that I almost always start to giggle. And I'm not saying I am immune to it all either. I spend a great deal of time deciding what to wear, and always leave the house a bit unhappy. But no one is looking at me anyways, so I don't even know why I care. What was I talking about again? Oh yeah, the show. I definitely find the alternative fashion week exciting and fun. It's about smaller labels, and generally more youthful and risk taking fashion. We (me and my sis) went to check out The Rage, which is a small shop in Kensington Market that supports all local designers. (Heartbeat included!) There was also some locals showing off their own personal style for the NOW magazine mystyle contest, and I thought that was pretty neat too. Good times! Although, we kind of checked in and checked out just as quickly to chow down on some diet cokes and fries. Also good times!

New Fave.

When I was a kid, I was a big time reader. Not that I was reading anything exceptional mind you, it was stuff like Sweet Valley Twins, but still, I was into it. I feel too manic to read books now, which is a sad statement about bigger issues, I know. It needs to change. At the very least, I think that I need to take a few minutes to slow down and focus on one activity before losing interest and moving on to something more exciting. And a fresh new copy of The Cheap Date Guide to Style has just arrived in my mailbox to help me out with this situation. I am totally stoked!*this is the UK cover-I can't find the North American one to show*

I have to say, the idea of a style guide is not something I'd normally buy into. They are always about basic looks, or style through the decades, and you know there is going to be a photo of Audrey Hepburn in there, and yes she's great, but hello?! we all know that already! Give me something new, and fun, and inspiring!

Cheap Date is a magazine which I didn't know much about. I have one back issue, which I ordered online here ages ago. I had no idea what it was, but the description just sounded fun, so I ordered it. And loved it. It's sort of a fashion mag, but more about good style, and just doing it your own way. The book is awesome. I have barely started reading it, but I absolutely love it. It's not trying to tell you how you should look, but instead giving suggestions on how to look original and classic and amazing. With tiny interviews on some of my favorites like Vivienne Westwood, Isabella Blow, Chloe Sevigny and a lot great basic suggestions, this book is a total keeper. YES! I read again. (that sounds so lame, but actually it's the truth)

A Salute To Those Who Know How To Get It Done

For about 2 years now, I have been trying-sometimes wholeheartedly, sometimes half assed- to create a bit of income from things I make. This, it seems, is a lot harder than it looks. Or maybe it's just me. I often just feel like calling it quits, but I don't. And I think that has a lot to do with seeing the amazing work that other people are doing. It's inspiring to see really talented people making a living doing something they love. Working on creative endeavors full time? YES! Well, I guess a lot of people do this, designers and artists alike, but getting to that stage feels like a real challenge. Again, maybe it's just me. One artist I love is Emily Martin and her work The Black Apple.
Her work has a beauty and haunting sadness that I find just lovely. You can check out her shop over there on etsy, that addictive place where I spend a lot of time looking at pretty things I want to buy right now.
